Our approach to investment management
Detterbeck Wealth Management uses your unique investment objective(s), time horizon, and expected rates of return as a baseline to design a portfolio that is tailored to your specific needs.
>> Investment Policy Statement
We create an Investment Policy Statement (IPS) that documents your goals, risk assessment, return objectives, income needs, time horizon, and other unique requirements before we implement any changes to your portfolio. This report will also outline the specific financial strategies that we feel are most appropriate for you and explain the rationale behind our recommendations. The IPS also shows how we will take your current portfolio and turn it into an optimized, tax efficient portfolio using proprietary investment strategies and vehicles. When you engage us as your adviser, we implement these recommendations, constantly monitor your portfolio’s progress, and make the necessary changes to ensure you stay on course.
On a quarterly basis, we will send you a consolidated performance report that evaluates your portfolio against appropriate benchmarks. We will also meet with you on an annual basis (at a minimum) to review your portfolio and discuss how its performance compares to your vision and financial plan.
>> Asset classes
Equities
Equities provide long-term capital growth and serve as an inflation hedge. We can help you get exposure to the available equity investment classes including large cap, small cap, international, and real estate as well as select an investment style: passive, growth, or value.
Detterbeck Wealth Management also uses ETFs, UITs, and Mutual Funds to gain exposure to other investor classes that may support your financial vision. In addition, we can place investments at virtually any outside money manager and coordinate those services going forward.
Fixed income
Fixed income investments add stability to your portfolio while
providing limited protection against extreme economic environments such
as a recession or uncontrolled inflation. A popular design that is
innovative, yet conservative, is a bond ladder (the construction of a
well-diversified portfolio of bonds with different maturities).
Our bond ladders can be structured to:
- Provide attractive portfolio yields
- Generate a reliable income stream
- Minimize exposure to interest rate risk
- Minimize reinvestment risk by allocating a portion of the portfolio to longer-term, high-yield bonds
- Maintain liquidity through the portfolio’s maturing, shorter-term bonds
- Meet changing market conditions and evolving financial goals
Non-correlated investments
In a market environment where traditional asset classes may not live up to historical averages, Detterbeck Wealth Management can show you how to enhance your portfolio with non-correlated (alternative) investment classes such as equipment leasing, timberland, real estate and oil & gas programs. Alternative investments tend to be less liquid than traditional asset classes, but generally make up for such inflexibility with steady and relatively high yields.
Most of these investments can be purchased at “NAV” and we receive no commission on their purchase. They are managed as part of the overall portfolio for which we receive our fee.
In today’s market climate, we believe non-correlated, alternative investments are a key element of a high-net worth investor’s financial strategy for a small portion of their overall portfolio.
